Juris Doctor (J.D.) (90 credit units)

Year 1 (30 credit units)

  • To complete first year, students must pass LAW 245.2 (with a grade of 60% or better), LAW 244.0, LAW 246.0*, and each of the following courses. In addition, students must achieve an annual average of 64% or better:
  • LAW 202.5
  • LAW 203.5
  • LAW 210.5
  • LAW 211.5
  • LAW 230.5
  • LAW 232.3

*or equivalent as approved by the Associate Dean, Academic

Year 2 and Year 3 (60 credit units)

Unless part-time permission is granted, students must register in 15 credit units per term. Students must receive a grade of 60% or better in each of the Minor Research Paper, Major Research Paper, and the seminar, to receive credit for those program requirements. Completion of two major papers trumps the requirement for a minor and a major.

The following is required in Year 2:

  • LAW 340.3 and a minor paper

The following is required in either Year 2 or Year 3:

  • LAW 421.3 or LAW 497.3, LAW 436.3, and a major paper.

Students must complete a minimum of 3 credit units from the following list of Seminar Classes or equivalent*, as approved by the Associate Dean, Academic. In some instances, the seminar class may meet more than one requirement.

Please note the following:

  • In special cases, a student may be given permission by the Associate Dean, Academic to undertake a program involving a load in excess of 15 credit units/term.
  • Students may be permitted to take a maximum of 6 credit units offered by another USask college/department, during second and/or third year, for credit towards the JD. In order to be counted, the course(s) must be pre-approved by the Associate Dean, Academic and students must achieve a final grade of 60% or better. Applications are assessed from the standpoint of how the non-Law senior-level course contributes to the applicant's understanding of the law.
