Performance Requirements

1. Applied Ensemble

The following evaluation method will be common to all sections: Attendance and Preparation (40%); Concert Participating (30%); Individualized testing (15% per semester).

Note: An unexcused absence from a concert performance will result in an automatic fail.

Attendance and preparation means regular attendance at rehearsals and ensemble events, and evidence of prior preparation of the musical materials.

Concert participation includes quality contribution to the ensemble, reflected in attitude, punctuality, responsibility in duties related to the concert and rehearsals, and quality of musical performance.

Individualized testing will take place at the end of November (well before the drop date for full-year courses) and at the end of March. The results of this testing, as well as evaluation for concert participation and attendance/preparation, will also be given at this time.

2. Recitals and Juries

Recitals and juries act as final exams for studio classes, and gradually increase in difficulty as students progress through their four years of applied lessons. In first year, a 10-minute noon-hour recital is optional for B. Mus. (Individualized) students, but strongly suggested. A 10-minute noon-hour recital is required for all students in second year. First and second year students will also complete a 10-minute jury at the end of both terms. In third and fourth year, all students will perform a 10-minute jury at the end of first term only. Third year students will perform a 25-30 minute recital in second term, and fourth year students will perform a 45-60 minute evening recital in second term, acting as a culmination of many years of hard work, talent, and dedication. Students are required to submit their recital program on a recital program template, signed by their instructor, at least two weeks prior to their recital date. All recitals are open to the public.
