The M.N.G.D. is of an interdisciplinary nature in that students applying for the Master's program require a Bachelor's degree from any field of study or specialization. The program is project-based and is designed to allow students to complete all requirements within 16 months of full-time study.

Admission Requirements

  • Language Proficiency Requirements: Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English. A minimum overall TOEFL score of 86 is required with a minimum score of 20 in each area, or a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each area, or another approved test as outlined in the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Academic Policies.
  • a four-year honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study
  • a cumulative weighted average of at least a 70% (U of S grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study (i.e. 60 credit units)

Applicants will be selected by the Graduate Affairs Committee (GAC) of the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development (ICNGD) on the basis of academic and research potential as demonstrated by academic credentials, letters of reference, and past experience and scholarly contributions. Applicants are required to submit the following:

  • 3 letters of recommendation; at least one of these letters should be from a professor acquainted with the applicant's previous scholarly work, while other letters may comment on the student's preparation for continuing studies through his/her work experience. The letters of recommendation must be accompanied by a completed GSR 101 form.
  • A writing sample such as a term paper or essay, graded or ungraded, by an instructor, or a work report.
  • In addition to the $75 application fee, applicants must submit a statement of research interests of approximately 1-3 pages in length describing specific areas of interest for the project; a description of why the applicant wants to pursue research in the interdisciplinary context of the ICNGD; and, a description of any employment or study experiences that relate to the research interests described.
  • Two official copies of all post-secondary transcripts (unless from the University of Saskatchewan).
