Admission Requirements

  • Language Proficiency Requirements: Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English. For more information on language proficiency requirements, see the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Academic Policies for more information.
  • a cumulative weighted average of at least a 70% (U of S grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study (i.e. 60 credit units)
  • a four-year honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study (such as Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Education, English, etc.)
  • a minimum of 9 credit units of undergraduate Linguistics courses, such as LING 111.3, LING 110.3, or LING 112.3, or any structural Linguistics course, such as Phonetics, Phonology, Lexicology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Discourse, or their equivalents. Students not satisfying the 9 credit units of Linguistics or equivalent requirement can be accepted on a probationary admission basis. These students will be required to complete the requirement within their first year of studies.
  • Additional selection criteria includes:
    • A Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a brief written description of previous relevant course work, grades, employment, and relevant training and life experience
    • Statement/Letter of Intent: Provide a 2-3 page self-written statement, detailing relevant academic background, prior teaching experience and your teaching philosophy. Also, include why you have chosen the University of Saskatchewan and your expectations of the program.
    • Writing Sample: Provide an 8-10 page writing sample, preferably in the form of a paper that had previously been submitted for a university level course.

Degree Requirements

Students must maintain continuous registration in a credit course or tuition-bearing maintenance
of status.

  • GPS 961.0, if research involves human subjects
  • GPS 962.0, if research involves animal subjects

Minimum of 30 credit units, including the following:

  • ECUR 841.3
  • ECUR 842.3
  • ESOL 801.3
  • ESOL 802.3
  • ESOL 803.3
  • LING 804.3
  • LING 811.3

3 credit units from the following list: 

  • ESOL 806.3
  • LING 803.3
  • LING 806.3
  • LING 808.3
  • LING 810.3

6 credit units of electives from the following list:

  • ECUR 331.3
  • ECUR 391.3
  • LING 803.3
  • LING 806.3
  • LING 808.3
  • LING 810.3
  • Or other 400 or 800 level linguistics courses (may have ECUR, ESOL or LING label)
